Dear all,
With sweaty palms, i write you this note from my hotel room near the beach.
Bossasso is a cooking oven. I believe the temperatures are soaring between 45 and 50 degrees celsius!
The people here are used to the heat, in fact they love it! They wouldnt trade anything for it. Sometimes i talk about the cold and the snow of Holland with my colleagues and i tell them about how Dutch governement and their salt policy: salt is used to melt away the frozen snow on the 'fietspaden' ( bicycle paths) and all roads.
My colleagues literally shake not only in disbeleif but also in awe! "I wouldnt last long in that cold" a male colleague assured me in Somali...." ...just like the melted snow" he continued seriously! The summer lasts for about 3 months and so entire families migrate to neighbouring towns because of the heat. People were expecting rains but the rains never came. Its amazing how the 2 climates differ...talk about the global village!!
So in the Somali tradition when it hasnt rained for so long and peope are desperate for it, a mass prayer is organised. Hundreds of God-fearing people come to one open big space and prayers start. The ritual is called 'Roobdoon' or literally translated into English 'seeking/searching for rain'.
I am happy and honoured to announce that i recently attended a Roobdoon session and i it was breathtakingly beautiful.
More about the Roobdoon story in the near future inshallah...
Due to the extreme heat, electrical goods give in. My laptop has crushed down and my camera and phone are dong funny things.
Of the 3 duty stations (the other 2 being Garowe, Qhardo) I like busy Bossasso town. I was abit afraid in the beginning to come here. I remember vividly the kidnapping of the 2 Humanitarian workers in this very town!! They could also take me into the mountains and demand for millions of dollars.....and who would come to my rescue...???!! A friend reassured me.." dont worry, they only want white people, because they have the dollars". Well, that really didnt help that much and so i am always on the lookout for freaky-looking money-hungry mountain people!! :-(
My room overlooks the entire town and i can monitor all movements from up here. To my left are the mountains in the distance. And to my right is the beach. I have never seen a more bluer beach and clearer waters.
I will be here one more day and then i have holiday! hoooeeeraaaa!
But as of mid may it is back to work!!!
There is so much to discover here!
Somalia is fabulous!
Love, Light and Laughter!
